This seems like the culture that Musk runs out of the workspace...

Zoom is one app that gets significantly worse with each iteration. The last year has shuffled icons around in the mobile app and now introduced some horrible application launcher into the desktop app for meetings. I know they want to avoid being discarded as people emerge from Covid but this is not the way to do it...

The desktop app shuffles things around while you're using it. Move to full screen? Everything is now in a different place. Someone starts sharing their screen? Your carefully placed chat and participant windows are now everywhere but. Sharing your own screen? Nope, you can't see the other participants full size, even if you have two screens, you have to have the tiny icons. A disaster.

It is definitely not "cheaper" in my experience but the marketplace is definitely easy to buy good insurance through. That said, you need income to support the massive monthly payments. Family plans in the most desirable places to live can easily be $40k/year for the insurance policy before you have to cover any out of pocket expenses.

Health insurance is the "golden handcuffs" for most people staying in a job.

GP was saying health insurance is cheaper than housing in MCOL areas. Implying if you can pay to live somewhere nice with no job, you can pay for health insurance too.

Regardless, there's subsidies if you don't have income, and it's just based on income; there's no requirement to seek income.

I'm near seattle, and my marketplace place for 2 adults around 40 and 1 child was around $1,200; unsubsidized.

I owned a domain name similar to a popular email hosting service at one time and setup wildcard acceptance of all emails sent to it. The influx of typod emails was hilarious but overwhelming.

I friend of mine has "common short personal name" at icloud.com, me.com, mac.com, gmail.com, hotmail.com, proton, ...

Importantly, one of those is bound to his iCloud account. During the holidays, he has an alternate "burner account", since his account can receive multiple reset requests per-minute for a couple of weeks. He estimates he gets 20000+ reset requests per year. According to him, it's just part of living his best life.

My HN username is what I use for lots of other things, including for older email providers. You'd be surprised how many reset emails I get to that username at various webmails. It's not exactly John Smith.

I am a "J Smith" and my employer has many of us.

Every quarter "we" (the group of specifically-first-named J-Smith's) are sent an email kindly reminding us to change our middle name in the corporate directory to "(Job Title)", to help people disambiguate us. The last time, there were three of us, so I tried to get the other "J Smith"s to change their names to "(Larry)", "(Moe)", and "(Curly)". No luck. There's a new crop of auxiliary "J Smith"s (I'm "J Smith Prime", in my mind), now, so I'm trying to work on them.

One day ... one day.

Oh, I can only imagine how annoyed I'd be with that. That's how I'd end up as "K (Viceroy) Strauser" or such.

It finally has begun.

I’d follow the results of Cybin and their psilocybin clinical trials.

You can also win the lottery but the odds aren’t in your favor.

Middle Eastern people are considered legally white.

That has more to do with the census sucking. There's no option even for Indian! So if you grew up in Bangalore, your options are "white" or "asian" I guess? What if you're an Australian Aboriginal? or a recently-contacted tribe from New Guinea?

It seems likely that he’d use his wealth to build something worse for society if he moves on.

MacOS X peaked in being user friendly with Tiger.

I vehemently disagree, Snow Leopard was the champion.

Fellow Snow Leopard fan here. Best version of any OS, ever, in my estimation.

+1

I wasn’t even on a Mac at the time but I was highly impressed by it. I modded the hell out of Windows to match SL visually.

I’m looking forward to the next SL release, assuming it ever happens.

+1... And the last one without cloud pushed down your throat

I was a college student the time and decided to spend hundreds of dollars on the SSD upgrade (going from 500gb HDD to 128gb SSD) for my Macbook Pro. Best decision ever. It was amazing to see the machine booting completely to the desktop in under 10 seconds, not even my M1 MAX MPB boots that quickly.

Snow Leopard ruined things. Tiger was the best. /s
