You may be thinking of Spolsky:

‘As a programmer, thanks to plummeting memory prices, and CPU speeds doubling every year, you had a choice. You could spend six months rewriting your inner loops in Assembler, or take six months off to play drums in a rock and roll band, and in either case, your program would run faster. Assembler programmers don’t have groupies.’

I suspect they haven't taken those photos yet.

Your hiding it doesn't help though... your Facebook email address is <<username>>@facebook.com

I don't see anyway to keep that secret.

It may not be secret, but if you choose to have the @facebook.com email address listed on your profile, it suggests that the @facebook.com email address is an appropriate email address to contact you at. I hid it from my contact information because facebook is not the best way to contact me and I don't want anyone to assume that it is because someone at facebook decided to see how many people don't do anything.

Sounds like someone found Dan Pink's lecture: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u6XAPnuFjJc

I think you are mistaken on the "Holding the phone isn't the problem;" (mental distraction seems correct though) I suggest a quick test for you: 1) Grab the edge of your display like it's the steering wheel 2) with your other hand hold your phone to your ear 3) try to check both blind spots without moving your hands

The freedom of movement is impaired with your elbow in the awkward position. Also when I do it, my elbow and hand blocks my view to the blind spot on that side.

Actually, studies really show there's no difference between hands-free and hand-held. See e.g. http://www2.potsdam.edu/hansondj/DrivingIssues/2006083010503...

I assume the obvious physical limitation makes at least some drivers more aware that they should keep some focus on the road.

This marks the end of all my "Hello World!" first programs; replaced by "goodbye, dad\n"

Of all the tributes, this is the one that brought a tear to my eye.

I worry that the long hours and extraordinary commitment to our craft may not be worth the sacrifices we make. The time is now for me, and I'm driving hard to a personal goal. Late nights and early mornings, essentially every waking hour is spent preoccupied by building a great product. And I see it in my son's eyes that he's missing me.

Reading Gruber's final paragraph reminds me that I'm going to regret this lost moment in time with my family, and that any success achieved will be paid for by their commitment to stand by me along the way.

Tonight, I'm going to kick off early and go watch his Hockey practice. And then enjoy a few periods of the Leaf opener tonight with the kid. He deserves it.

Hey man, try to pitch that to H&M or Armani. xD

I took my two boys to a launch because I knew the end was near. STS-125 the first and last time two shuttles were prepped to launch at the same time: Hubble makes the ISS unreachable if a problem occurs. (The second shuttle was the rescue plan since they couldn't get to the reentry vehicle parked at the ISS.)

Yes, I cried like a little girl.

Good times.

TIL about STS-400. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/STS-400

Seeing the Shuttles next to one another is pretty awesome. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Space_shuttles_Atlantis_%2...
