I think it's safe to say that there will never again be a high level competition where overtime goals count double.

each tournament has its own set of rules, so there’s no one "today's rules" for it not to be possible in; however, in all current major international tournaments, only zero-sum games ever go to extra time, which rules this out

> In another analysis, prominent climatologist Katharine Hayhoe monitored responses to a tweet on climate change that she published twice, as an experiment, on separate dates before and after Musk’s takeover.

> She counted the hostile comments and examined them for signs they came from bots – automated accounts that researchers say are pushing mass misinformation.

> Inauthentic accounts can be identified by analysis tools such as Bot Sentinel.

> Replies from apparent trolls or bots increased 15 to 30 times over a two-month period compared with the previous two years, Hayhoe tweeted in January 2023.

> in the past few months, since the takeover and changes at Twitter, the amount, vituperativeness, and intensity of abuse has skyrocketed

We've banned this account for using HN primarily for ideological battle. That's not allowed, regardless of what ideology you're battling for or against, and—before the inevitable objections roll in: yes, we ban plenty of accounts battling from opposing sides (and I have the flame burn scars to prove it), and no, we don't care about your ideology or opinions. We care about protecting this forum for its intended purpose, which is curious conversation on topics of intellectual interest. Flamewar and internet drama are off topic because they destroy that.

If you don't want to be banned, you're welcome to email hn@ycombinator.com and give us reason to believe that you'll follow the rules in the future. They're here: https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html.

Please, however, don't create accounts to break HN's rules with. That will eventually get your main account banned as well.

p.s. This post is not about the comment I'm replying to. I'm putting it here simply because this was your most recent comment and I want you to see it. Rather, it's about the account history as a whole, which includes way too much ideological flamewar to be in keeping with the site guidelines.

> vituperativeness

> vituperative - : uttering or given to censure : containing or characterized by verbal abuse. [1]

I suppose I've got my word of the day.

> Now the site itself has unquestionably transformed under his leadership into an alternative social-media platform—one that offers a haven to far-right influencers and advances the interests, prejudices, and conspiracy theories of the right wing of American politics.

> Three barriers exist for Musk to succeed with his “X” idea. The first is, people outside of Asia don’t like “super apps.”

>Second, as I’ve detailed before, Musk is proving incompetent about media, both social and mainstream.

>And third, Elon Musk is becoming too reviled a person to succeed with an app that works only if nearly everyone buys into it.

>Musk seems to be embracing increasingly radical views — the kind one gets from trolls, shitposters and Russian disinformation agents on 4chan.

He's doing a great job of debunking the idea that rich people really know what's going on.

Anything that can be done regarding this? Imagine if Paul Graham was defending a white supremacist murderer or spread anti-Semitic rhetoric or saying things were psyops conspiracies, would that be quickly outlawed and flagged here?

Exactly, just see the brainwashed masses who believe in Qanon conspiracy, which Trump and Musk both amplify. It's an alternate reality.

He has started embracing white supremacists, far right politicians and even qanon conspiracy theories. it's a terrifying and dangerous situation for something as influential as social media (as if it wasn't bad enough)

It's sad that Musk has been radicalized. It's ok to admit it.he can't accept the fact the Texas shooter is a white supremacist.

> Musk also responded to tweets spreading other Soros conspiracy theories, including false claims that Soros, a Holocaust survivor, helped roundup Jews for the Nazis, and claims that Soros is somehow linked to the Rothschilds, an entirely separate antisemitic conspiracy theory about Jewish bankers which the Soros’ conspiracies have largely replaced.

I wish Vice has elaborated on this with some specifics. He "responded to" tweets that were anti-Semitic, but how did he respond to them? Positively? Negatively?

I don't think there's much substance in this article, which is a shame because I'd love to see some proof if the claims made by it are true.

The substance is his public twitter account? They have direct quotes in the article. You can plug them into twitter / google etc and see that he said what they directly said he said.

Here's him perpetuating a conspiracy theory [1], here's him perpetuating the typical far-right conspiracy theory [2], here's the interview where he doubles down on the white supremacist shooter not being a white supremacist and claiming bellingcat is a psy-op [3] (and before you ask: the shooter was a white supremacist [4])

Thank you for finding these. I wish the article had linked to his tweets directly, because I think that context is important here.

> The Twitter owner has turned into a full-fledged right-wing conspiracy theorist
