Maybe I'm just ethnocentric, but I don't like all the foreign (greek?) text. It confuses me. When I click the english flag, it doesn't make the greek go away.
Yes, it's greek :). Your not ethnocentric by the way. The national flags let you switch the UI language. Foreign products/purchases/shops will not be change/translated. Not all features are implemented yet though: in the future, these "overseas" items (shops and purchases) will be filtered by the distance of your reference locations.
Very interesting. I don't think I would ever enjoy using a keyboard like this, but I kept reading their site because they had a section about Emacs commands. (I have found enough keys to do everything they advertise in one key sequence... but at least they are trying. Much better than "hurr, you can zoom Google Maps more easily.")
I'm a vi user, but only use when I ssh to a shell. When I'm in vi I usually switch to my laptop keyboard unless it's just a few keys :) Have never bothered learning the vi (or emacs) gestures.
I never timed, but it never felt like I was typing very slowly once I got used to it. The gestures like opening/closing a window, exiting an app, copy and paste etc is really handy. Especially as they apply across all apps, not just within a specific editor. The gestures are also configurable, and supports different OS modes. Most importantly, it reduced the pain in my wrists and fingers (might just have been a side effect of typing slower).
Bought it about 6 years ago, have been using it since. Was pretty disappointed when I heard the company has closed down. And a few years later when I heard about the iPhone pinch gestures, my first thought was - this must be the reason!
IMO it should, but right now I use a SQLite database as a permanent cache, so the video will never change. As soon as I get the urge to slack off some more, I'll just plug in Django's memcached support and set the expiration to a day or two.
Are you shocked that it works or shocked that I would be so stupid as to use SQLite? I expect extremely low load and that I'll have plenty of time to move to memcached and no database...
This is mostly a hobby business that I want to run lean without much plan for growth. I'm looking for more efficient business accounts that better match my uses.
A hobby business is not a business, it's a hobby and hobbies cost money.
If you plan on this being a business you have to figure out first how much turnover you have to make to make a go of it, and if $13 / month for a bank is a make-or-break decision then I would suggest you look long and hard at whether or not this is a feasible endeavor.
For sure it is possible that you'll be doing this expense out-of-pocket for a while, but then you just put all these expenses against your future revenues.
A typical small business, including all overhead, such as administration, tax filings, equipment and so on will cost you at least $200 / month, so if your projected profits when this thing is up and running are lower than that you really should reconsider your plans.
This is not meant to demoralize you, I just think that if you doubt about spending $13/month that you have other issues than choosing the right bank.
I chose mine for reliability, easy access to international banking, the fact that my balance is insured to a serious amount and so on, the 'costs per transaction' and 'monthly fees' were the least of the considerations.
The recent crisis has born out the wisdom of that decision, by going with a large but cooperative bank they were hit very little by the affairs that caused their main competitor to now be mostly state property.
The whole thing was sketchy. They told me there wouldnt be fees, so when fees showed up, I complained and they said they would remove them. When the fees didnt go away, I asked to be refunded. They said they could only refund the last 3 months of fees since they had "no record" past that, even though I had the account for a year.
Anyway, I just didn't want to deal with them anymore so I closed the account.
They look really good though.
