REALLY like that saying about 50% problem 50% distribution.
I think you hit it spot on. I see Groupon, yelp, foursquare, all as going after the local space. Some people saw it as a tech problem, some people just looked at it as a distribution problem.
GroupOn found the low tech extremely scalable solution, and is reaping the benefits.
Companies like Foursquare are probably a couple of years away from having enough businesses do self service on their tech solution...
Any of you get paying customers before you had a product? How did that work?
Also, how do you handle all the feedback from early customers on product changes? Obviously some are great requests, but many customers make requests are outside of the scope, and could tempt you to change course (if you're on the right course :-)
Theres still a strong trend in angel investing to remain quite and lay low. Thats changing with the new guard (sacca, lindzon, dave, etc) and its starting to trickle down to other parts of the country.
Soon enough I think people will see the benefits of being visible and having good deals come to you, like Fred and AVC....
The problem is that you have to filter out the 99.5% of non good deals, and most angels don't have the time/resources/interest to do that. (That's why they come to YC- pg does a lot of prescreening for them)
Besides, what's the likelihood you'd invest in a random person that comments on your blog? I'd trust that person only slightly more than I would a Nigerian scammer.
I've been using Grancentral ever since it was aquired by google, and its been great.
The main use was so that I didn't have to give out my personal cell phone number for work, and so that I didn't have to carry a second phone.
Having a separate voicemail box just for work has been great, and I've even used the call recording feature when someone was giving me very important detailed instructions.
No concerns with spam, and I haven't noticed any downtime, so I'd recommend it.
Would love to see more integration so I don't have a whole separate address book in Grandcentral...
I've been using my GC# in a similar manner and its been a great experience. The call log and the ability to filter #'s is a good way to categorize and 'file' my phone calls - And I really like the new UI too!
I was skeptical at first when GC launched (mainly having to give out a new number), but once you properly configure your settings and start getting phone calls you start realizing the service's usefulness.
Yeah, VCs are looking for massively scalable businesses. Lawfirms require man power, and thats not scalable, or at least not on the scale that a website is....
Evernote is web, desktop, ios, etc, etc
Remember the milk is everywhere... so is Simplenote
