I feel for the guy, but it sounds like he was spending beyond his means from the start, and then quit his job on top of that. According to cnn the average cost of raising a child is 240K, not including college. Multiply that by 8 and spread it over 18 years, and that is 107K per year, for 18 years. And that is just for the kids.

It was a different time and all, but quitting your job completely when you have a large mortgage and 8 kids seems irresponsible. His eventual recovery is inspiring, but what would have happened to those 8 kids if his wife couldn't fall back on the German citizenship and its social safety net? This could have easily ended much worse for them.

He says he had $500K in savings at age 48. That seems a bit low considering his earnings and all the kids. Why he would think he was flush enough to risk two years off at that age I don't know.

I think the article mentions that it's small businesses that are at risk. Most mom and pop shops don't have the greatest IT infrastructure.

What sort of IT infrastructure do they usually have? - My gut reaction was that they wouldn't have a need for a server in the first place, but I guess that depends on how small it is. A simple file-share though, would be rather vulnerable to this.

I know a lot of people who would get offended if you said UI designer is a synonym for Visual designer. Is it really common to interchange the two?

Better yet, hack the drone's controls and send it after its owner :P

You can use them to decorate the memorial for your life savings :)

Isn't archery kind of a one sided workout for your back? I imagine if you're a right-handed you'd only be effectively working out the right side of your back.

It does sound more fun than doing dumbbell rows.

I think it's difficult to simply recommend one type of therapy and expect it fit everybody's needs. Having said that, I would recommend CBT just because as far as I can tell, its effectiveness seems to backed by a lot of science.

I'm kind of in the same boat though. Finding a therapist takes a lot of work, and building up the motivation to do the work is especially difficult when you're depressed. It's a catch 22. When the depression passes, so does the motivation to find treatment.

Maybe if you have somebody close you can confide in, you should ask them to help you find a therapist. If you have any friends who are seeing therapists, their therapists may be able to refer you to others. In the US, many have sliding scales.

Good luck!

Time to start working on the script for "Meat Hackers".

The issue with using this for loyalty cards is that in my experience, many stores have scanners than can't scan a glossy screen very well.

Also, the skeuomorphic design is nice but you could easily fit more cards on the screen by using a simpler list view.

It's not only the glossiness, it's also about the original size. Barcodes work because they are at a fixed size, and a picture on screen can seldom reproduce the exact same size.

This is also why QR Codes have reference points (those three corner blocks or the big centre block)

Can you reference any studies? If this is true, I've been doing it all wrong...
