BASH and using the command line creating files and folders on the command line then launching the desktop to give them something tangible, what ever you you do in the text world can have an effect in the graphics world, my son is six and we use scratch, normally he just wants to draw pictures when he's working with it, but in order to get to scratch he has a few small tasks before he can access the gui like create a work folder etc... to access the desktop "startx".
I recall starting with a full court press for him to program, but had to ease up he's 6, 10min explanation allow him to implement the task explained and continue with your fun, at this rate he won't hate it, but will have working knowledge and concepts before we put him in a camp age 8 hopefully.
Funny thing is that he's constantly asking when can we get on the RaspberryPi again.
So the no pressure method is working for him.
1.My apologies for the rant on HN
2.I'm on mobile
3.And this topic hits home
Very true this is aimed at a generation of Xbox players (youth) who aren't tied to the old methods of getting things done this is basically a computer/tablet with enough power for the standard user and if word,excel... etc runs on it, it's what my kids are getting for school very flexible for them. Though three things can kill microsofts growth.
1.price point, people won't understand the pro model's pricing which will be the same as a standard pc in the $1,000 range
2.dont try to be like apple actually do the opposite, prove your product is different.(the viewing should have been live your the new guy on the block)
3.make a tough decision and only allow windows 8 on touch screen desktop p.c's if it's not touch screen you have to use the alternate desktop interface.
On top of this I'm wondering how much the language their using will be an advantage C++ if any, if they supply devs with great templates like apple.
I agree circles should have been created years ago when there was demand for privacy, now that users of Facebook have become complacent to the noise in their stream it's hard to get anyone to switch though I don't use Facebook, I do find the the level of conversation different than G+ I mainly use my G+ as a news stream for what important to me not who's important to me sticking to the Google model information, not today's noisy gossip, to me this stand off is the equivalent of Jerry Springer vs. Oprah Winfrey forgive my analogy, basically in order for G+ to compete with Facebook if it were trying, Google would need to water down/dumb down who it's marketing it to
Thank you for this clarification, and nicely said would've been nice to get an update a few hours ago stating they weren't taking U.S sales, same thing happen for the eBay auction, forgive me HN just needed to vent
yes, Khan going in the direction of programming languages seems abstract I've been waiting for him to take the math video's and organize them in groups of specific studies say for instance all math related to algorithmic studies, specific engineering studies grouped all together like a course this seems like it would be productive to the user instead it seems as though he's beginning to jump on what's popular and add it to the site
I agree. Their exercise framework can really use much improvement and there are a ton of subjects that don't even have any exercises yet. I would like them to concentrate on math and physics for now and work on really making awesome content and exercises. They should leave the CS and programming stuff for Coursera, Udacity etc. and focus on what they are good at (which programming is not imho).
The Title is misleading, other than C++ being your main method of work in the first sentence, everything else is about Python,Django and how great the two are
I see where you're coming from. It's not meant to be a Python/Django love-fest. Rather I was trying to say there's really a lot to learn if you're coming to web development from another field. That said, it's definitely learn-able due to the orthogonality and ease of use of many of the tools available.
I've been been eyeballing this tutorial as an introduction to OpenGL/3d graphics, my question to HN is what's your opinion on learning 3d graphics with OpenGL vs. something like libcinder.org or www.openframeworks.cc which has bindings to OpenGL I'm not doing any game design mainly learning and understanding what the facilities of the API are and the logic of graphics programming
I'm 2 years into emacs myself and end up with the same feeling, in my opinion the Advanced user uses the help before online documentation, because everything is provided in emacs the self documenting text editor, not only that but Advanced really means learning Elisp so that whatever you want to implement can be done to your liking not someone else's template, but I do know this for sure I do love emacs and I mean that It's the one tool that has the same model I think in one tool many platforms.
Ha...I agree but I do appreciate this thread I currently had to review geometry while studying C++ and most of what's explained on the document is what I discovered while reviewing so it's nice to have it documented, now it's time to get the logic down math is everything I'm discovering when it comes to C.S./Programming, it defines how you build Data Structures/Algorithms well apologies for the rant it's just good to see a thread which helps in an area of my current study, and it's true using geometry makes programming and math easier to comprehend
