This whole idea and article leave me speechless (sic).
Talking and writing are two different mediums. Never heard of Marshall MacLuhan?
I curse a lot, at home, where I live alone. As soon as I step out the door I talk differently to my neighbors. I also adopt a different voice when I visit my family in another state. And then another when talking to co-workers.
So which of those should I write in?
Try putting "fucking" in the HN search bar. The top article I get is "Fucking Sue Me" with 689 points. Great.
I can't begin to express how irritating it is to read such articles/blog posts with "fucking" all over the text, even thought at home I probably say that word 10-20 times a day. But I'm not writing that for others to read.
And then we have this gem from PG:
"Informal language is the athletic clothing of ideas."
Really? If I talked like that to my friends or co-workers they'd be laughing at me for days.
To "write like I talk" I'd say: "what an arrogant fucking stupid shit statement."
This article is from 2013, not reflected in the HN title.
I seriously doubt the following statement in the article is still true:
"The users of Mechanical Turk are still early adopters, which explains why so many workers are closer to the median US household income of around $50,000 than to the poverty line."
I did some survey work on MT back then, it was fun for a few days, then became incredibly mind numbing.
A more recent article on MT (probably posted already to HN):
I was looking for a definition of "boredom" that I agree with and "literally not know[ing] what to do because nothing excites you" is the one I most agree with and is the most succinct.
I could replace "excites" with "interests", "relaxes" or some other state changing term.
Thank! That's really encouraging to hear! :)
Yeah, in order for apps like these to be useful they need to be on as many devices/platforms as possible.
Re just launched a few days ago on the Play store, so will be uploading to the Amazon store soon too.
Its still first release so you will run into some bugs, but we are working through them as we speak! Thanks again for downloading! :)
It's weird, I listened to the first couple of samples on my PC speakers, not loud, and the volume of my tinnitus dropped noticeably. Everything else (TV, fan, chair squeaking) sound the same.
> But the worry is that in 2015, no matter how good your game is, the audience has way way way way too many amazing games to choose between.
And it has also become way too easy to acquire games. Back in the 1980/90's, unless I wanted a specific game, I could easily spend an hour in a store trying to decide which one game I could afford to buy.
Meanwhile, it took less than a minute to purchase Spider: Rite of the Shrouded Moon on Steam, looks like fun, cheers.
I've been getting recorded messages twice a day now from Uber about the "bad old days back" when "cabs didn't want to leave Manhattan".
I've maybe had that problem 2-3 times in 30 years living here.
There are already plenty of yellow, green and livery cars where I live (Astoria), and plenty of cabs in Manhattan willing to drive me home at all hours.
No one is trying to kill Uber in NYC, just put some temporary cap on new drivers until an (ill defined) study is done.
Uber, you can stop phoning me every day, I won't be using your vital service any time soon.
Every couple months it seems like I see another Facebook or Reddit post with the stat that 90% of the restaurants featured on kitchen nightmares go under within a year of their episode airing. As if a show that focuses on failing restaurants is somehow to blame when those restaurants fail.
It seemed like a good comparison for Greece and what they tried to do with the Olympics.
The OP is saying that Gordon Ramsay isn't to blame for whatever happens to restaurants after he leaves. The big show might not save Greece or the restaurant, but the original issue is not the big show's fault.

Good bye HN.
