This looks really neat, I played with it a bit and the DSL is well thought out.

One thing I can't figure though: how do we set default values for internal Struct?

Said default values are mentionned in the documentation (here: <https://slint.dev/releases/1.0.2/docs/slint/src/reference/ty...>).

// ok even if a is missing, it will just have the default value

Currently the default is just whatever empty value for that type (so 0 or "")

But since this is something that was asked before, I created an issue: https://github.com/slint-ui/slint/issues/2936

Neat!

What a load of utter bullshit.

"infinitely knowledgeable"? Bollocks. Big deep learning models work fine, and if you forget the part where big firms hoard loads of data without any kind of consent it's pretty cool tech. But that's not knowledge, and it has already been explained many times.

But my beef is more with the author's view of inequality.

So, bourgeoisie isn't stealing from the proletariat? How to describe a society when one percent gets more than half of all new wealth every year? [0]

Tesla are now ‘affordable’ cars? Hell, the cheapest model is twice my yearly income.

Can't say I'm struggling to understand how some people can think this way though. Can't say I'm happy about it either.

With tax credit the cheapest Tesla is $30k. With default interest and loan terms, the Tesla would cost about $4500 / year.

Median annual household income in the US is $71k, so the cheapest Tesla would be ~6.3% of median household income.

Personal finance experts say car loan payments should be no more than 10% of take home pay. (https://www.nerdwallet.com/article/loans/auto-loans/much-spe...)

You not being able to afford a Tesla and the cheapest Tesla being generally affordable can both be true.

Do you know what this median annual household income of $71k means outside of the USA? Inequality is a global problem, unfortunately. Cheapest Tesla being generally affordable in one country doesn't mean it's not fairly expensive.

Side notes: - the World Inequality Database is full of interesting data (https://wid.world/) - I'm not sure the median income is always relevant (I mean, if half of a given population couldn't affort to eat correctly, I wouldn't say food is "generally affordable") - fortunately, not everybody needs a Tesla, let alone a car

Well, what's "generally affordable"? $30k for a car isn't even that expensive these days (in the US at least), relative to the competition. The average cost of a new car in the US is almost $50k. Except for the very cheapest new cars you're almost certainly going to pay over $20k.

Coastal Americans live in a bubble.

And the bubble is in a gated community to keep out all the poors they unjob'd.

Being French, I studied Montaigne in middle school (or high school, can't remember) – I did not expect to bump into him here. Quelle bonne surprise !

I think his direct influence on English speakers has definitely dropped off a lot. I first learned about him from an essay Virginia Woolf wrote on him.

Well I had never heard of Woolf before the age of 25, so there's that.

It's not a "sustainability tax", it's "acknowledging people are not slaves nor are resources infinite"

"Markets can remain irrational longer than you can remain solvent”

It may not make sense to repair for many consumers. In a few years we might have better codecs or similar and you'll want to upgrade your crusty headphones anyway.

>>In a few years we might have better codecs

This sounds like something could be done with a firmware update.

Nope, for latency and battery reasons this would be done by a specific chip, e.g. https://www.icstation.com/audio-module-bluetooth-compatible-... / https://www.tinyosshop.com/ts8670

The same's true on the smartphone transmitter side.

That 2nd link you shared, has 3 links under "Documentation" to firmware downloads.

Or the speakers themselves, eventually

> "Markets can remain irrational longer than you can remain solvent”

I notice every time the cost of a properly sustainable product comes up, the conversation always turns to what a short-sighted bastard everyone else is, and I can only assume the people who make that argument are already making moral choices themselves, which is honestly just heartwarming to see.

Replying to the last sentence: the essay is also full of repetitions. I didn't make anything of it the first time I read it, but now the AI-generated hypothesis is on the table it seems quite likely.

I reckon this analysis would benefit from absolute figures. A drop in market share doesn't necessarily mean less users if said market is experiencing a massive growth.

I don’t think anyone who understands market share thinks that a drop in market share means fewer users. But it does mean that your product has stagnated and commercial interests are going to be focusing their energy elsewhere where it can have a more outsized ROI.

A constant market share as the pie grows is great - it means your attractiveness as a platform is keeping up with overall growth. If someone needs a 2% growth to edge out competition, targeting Linux could be valuable. A shrinking market share means I should invest elsewhere. Linux has remained niche because you need to get about 5-10% to warrant commercial interests because there’s a non 0 cost porting to Linux and providing some level of support. Also your potential customers have to spend money which is less clear from these numbers who the Linux community fares vs others. For example iOS customers tend to be more valuable than android because they are typically higher income, there’s a lot of them in terms of market share and absolute numbers and spend more money on the App Store / in app than the typical android user.

The last post on PeerTube was apparently deemed interesting, so I thought a Framasoft AMA would be welcome.

You're right, and Framasoft (the French non-profit behind the project) knows it. If you can help, or know people who can, I think they'd be glad to hear from you!

Yup, it's that amazing.

That's why I think said institutions should donate to the project ;)

PeerTube is a free, decentralised and federated video platform, and a part of the fediverse, meaning you can interact with it via Mastodon and other tools, thanks to the ActivityPub protocol.

There is only one paid developer, working for the French non-profit Framasoft – and I think it's important to share this in non French-speaking spaces.

If you want to help them "Collectivise / Convivialise the internet": https://soutenir.framasoft.org/en/

Is there a french version of this article?
