Author of the article here. I did not know that – thank you for sharing. This makes the poem even better but definitely not the best choice for the article!
Since you're here, I wanted to ask if you've looked into military decision making. This may be anecdotal, but one can often see officers making split second choices with far reaching consequences without too much deliberation. Not sure if that's something that's specifically trained for or just a result of the uh, working conditions.
I'm actually in the process of interviewing my dad about that! He's an engineer and used to be sent to war zones to assess local military airport infrastructures. He was sometimes dropped there with a military unit just for a few days. There were time when they didn't all make it back.
I always thought there was a certain coldness to the way he was making decisions, but it all makes much more sense now that I know more about those past experiences. He seems to think it's the result of the working conditions. I have tons of notes and audio recordings which I want to clean up and publish at some point.
I live in London but I went back to Paris where I'm from for Christmas. Here in Paris it was the norm: everyone got tested before driving to their families for Christmas. The days before Christmas there were white tents every couple of blocks where you could get tested without an appointment. You're probably right that's what lots of people in London did as well.
OP here. People losing their jobs during this pandemic is a tragedy, but the article is about making time for the things that truly matter in life. Seems like I didn't manage to convey that well.
Anecdotal but many people in my family don't have jobs and are still too busy to spend time with their parents, siblings, etc. who would love to support them.
I copy and paste lots of stuff into Roam, which got tedious after a while, so I created a tiny extension for Roam. It basically grabs the text you highlight, formats it with markdown, and appends the source (title and URL of the page where the snippet came from).
You then click escape and paste the snippet in a new block in Roam. It's available on the Chrome Store and I also submitted it to Firefox so should be live soon. It's nothing complicated but it makes my life much easier!
I'm currently working on a small flashcards tool myself so this immediately peaked my interest! Great execution - love the design and the group aspect of it.
Sorry if that's how it came across! Didn't mean to be insensitive. My point was that so far the coronavirus is not worse than the seasonal flu (400,000 deaths each year), where we don't see the same panic.
Sorry my post appears like a low effort dismissal, and I did not want to single out your post specifically, but I think there should be a middle ground between this is the end or this is a non event.
> it means that at one point you though "is there another option?" about snacks
Yes, that was my point in the article, though maybe not clear enough. This conversation has given me lots of ideas to improve it. Thank you!
