> I had to parse text carefully and use my own familiarity with the industry to understand that they were going to decide my race based on my photo/name

Yup. This is exactly what I took it as. Between this and their other data sharing policies I decided to delete my account.

I got this email and it was not exactly easy to turn it off considering I hadn't logged in to my Airbnb account in a while. Perhaps a better solution would have been to provide a click within the email that would allow you to turn it off from there.

Or maybe even make the project, leave it off per user by default and include directions on how to opt in?

There is a direct click on the email that leads you to the setting page. I am using a gmail client, so not sure if the link doesn’t appear in other emails

Yes. There is a link in the email that leads you to the settings page but I hadn't logged in a while so after entering my phone number along with the code they sent me I also had to enter a code they sent to my email. My point being that clicking the link in the email should automatically turn off the "feature" I shouldn't have to log in.

My experience as well.

This is something I always worried about after buying my house in SoCal. When I purchased the house it came up in the closing disclosures that there was a "capped" oil well within 500 feet of our house. I search every where for it. Asked neighbors and everyone was clueless to it's where being. Needless to say I never found it but did have the air in our house checked for methane as well as radon which were at normal levels.

The LA basin had a lot wells especially in the South Bay [1]. I could totally see this being a problem especially since they were capped so long ago.

This is awesome. Thanks for posting this. Question for you do you happen to have a soldering iron you recommend for the build out?

I should technically solder more of this, as it's mostly together with prototype cables at the moment. Any soldering iron should work, but I am partial to Weller Soldering Stations. I have one from ~10 years ago that has an analog adjustment, though now I see they look to be mostly digital. Their website has them around $300 for some reason but they are on amazon for closer to $100 (which is what I got mine for).

Just a warning, amazon has been pretty bad with fake soldering irons.

If you don't want to spend much, the TS-100 or TS-80 are both very good choices under $100.

While I'm pretty frugal myself I do splurge on cars; currently own the Model 3. The reason being is that safety technology is always improving. So driving an '00 Civic with 220k will save you some cheddar it may cost you a severe injury or worse.

I'm not saying I don't want one (I rented a P100D on vacation and it was fantastic). Its just not the right decision for me to use as a commuter car despite how much my heart wants one, and I have to actively supress my desire to purchase one, but it does make me feel more fiscally responsible not to buy it. I also probably don't value safety as much as you. I have a twin turbo 300zx track car which I'll never sell and goes completely against everything I described above to be honest, so I'm a hypocrite regardless!

Moderation in everything :)

If you care about safety, don't overlook the effects of weight differential. Odysseys are quite safe, partly because they're pretty heavy.

You cannot go wrong with most Herman Miller chairs. I originally started researching chairs because I have was having severe back pain. After several doctors appointments I found the cause, my old Ikea chair. I ended up going with the Mirra 2 and fell in love with it. It completely solved my back pain within two months. The price can be off-putting so I recommend checking out Design Within Reach's outlets (owned by Herman Miller) where you can get Aeron's and Mirra 2's for half off. Hope this helps.

I own a BMW i3 and the Tesla Model 3. Both have cellular connections and are constantly pinging their motherships. At least on the Tesla I have the option of opting out. No such ability is available on the BMW.

> No such ability is available on the BMW.

Does the CEO of BMW tweet that it's your fault after you wreck your car?

No. But the CEO of Tesla doesn't do that either.

(They can't tell the reason for the crash remotely, they extract the data directly, in person, with physical access to the car.)

Interesting. Can't you wrap the antenna in a Faraday cage, or simply disconnect it?

You most certainly can prevent it from paging home to BMW. Either thru the settings menu or hacking it via ODB2 port and coding it off with software like E-Sys.

Yeah, like any normal customer would do. /s

I mean, it's the same software the a BMW dealership uses when they code your car. I was easily able to learn how to code my own BMW using it within a day. It's not hard.

Unfortunately GM has decided to discontinue the Volt. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/chevy-volt-discontinued-chevrol...

Yes. If you go to a Tesla store they should be able to match you with these vehicles. Plenty of datapoints on r/teslamotors

This is exactly what I did. I have an IoT VLAN and I also limit the ports accessible to those devices. I just wish this setup was available to the average consumer that doesn't know how to do this.
