I've been using DroidCam for my Windows desktop for the last few days. Works super well, although my phone seems to get hot after about an hour of using it.

I think the parent may have been sarcastic. I certainly hope so. Life was much better before my idols had entirely mundane Instagram feeds.

Imho it can be very misleading to think of Instagram feeds, or any social media for that matter, as "private life".

Many social media users are very self-conscious and calculating with the "image" they are building with particular accounts.

It's all feeding into this idea of perfect infallible human beings, as supposedly showcased on social media, but in reality, such humans simply don't exist.

Particularly in the context that often it's our flaws that define us as humans, not being able to admit to having any does not strike me as a healthy and rational attitude.

Ah, no, I have the opposite problem!

For instance, musicians one really likes, one projects them into images of saints. Then they're out their putting selfies on, sharing insipid quotes or just generally seeking validation, and the mirage crumbles a bit.

Anticonsumerist is actually a great word. I might adopt it. Much more succint.

Rubbish drivel. It's a trend nowadays for people to write longform articles purporting to lay bare some great truths but really are just an excuse for the author to regurgitate some recent things they read. It really rubs me the wrong way.

First of all, the unnecessary mention of "mostly white male". I'm So. Bloody. Tired of this trope being injected into every article at every opportunity. I get it. Life unfair. Move on. It's like how every NYT comment section will mention Trump within the first two comments. Give it a rest already!

Then, the vague-at-best connections between minimal art and Minimalism as a response to the excesses of Boomers. It's really not that complicated. Grow up in a house of hoarders, and you're well on your way to embracing minimalism.

Lastly, this whole "Your bedroom might be cleaner, but the world stays bad". Yeah! Minimalism doesn't promise world peace! It's just a way to make your own life more manageable and sane!

Just because a piece is longform doesn't mean it's good. Reading this article was a terrible waste of my time.

Is there any reason you couldn't just write "Amazon"? I see people do this thing often on HN, for instance "At $DayJob, we do...". Is it like a sign of belonging to a tribe?

Edited. Thanks for the feedback. I used $AMZN to abbreviate it, but I can see how it is distracting.

Reminiscent of the Micro$oft days of yore at Slashdot.

Yes!!! :) I miss that Bill Gates borg image: https://lurkertech.com/bill-the-borg/

Yeah, what kind of criterion is that? "The best STD" and all that...

You had a desktop computer, which makes life much easier for you. As someone who was (and will soon be again) in the market for my one and only computer, the iPad is a non-starter. It's SO limited.

* Software development, with the best will in the world, isn't really possible on it.

* No quick ways to open up multiple windows, alt-tab between them, snap them side by side etc.

* No mouse support (Admittedly, I tried them a while back, but by all accounts, the mouse support until this update was still bolted on).

* Shitty af file system (Admittedly another thing that is moving in the right direction).

* Woeful stand. The previous folio was a joke, especially at it's price. It was unstable, lacked a trackpad, and personally, I hated the typing feel.

It was all rather disappointing, because I was so tempted by it. A sub-1 kg setup that one could pack in one's bag and forget, with a proper aspect ratio, with touch support, with great battery life, with the Apple quality etc.

Could've been great, but isn't there yet.

Yep. That thing is a fucking abomination. I believe it's called backstage or something and the idiots who petitioned for, designed and approved it should be dishonorably discharged.

Exactly. I'm constantly needled by the fact that there isn't a single Youtube reviewer who is a full-time programmer. Or at least someone not in the "creative" domains. At least none of the big names are. It's always Nvidia this and Premiere Pro rendering times that and SD card slot whatever.

Fine, but where are the people who will spend ten minutes talking about the different keyboard options they considered for their daily driver? Where are the people who have to read code for a living and will openly mock 16:9 with it's pathetic vertical space? Talking about how easy it is to dual boot Linux on the machine?

If anyone knows of such reviewers, please drop a link below. I'm sick of wathching MKBHD.

I've gone to a nearby Micro Center and I found I can accept and even readily enjoy the keyboard on the new Dell XPS 2-in-1 with a 3840x2400 display (16:10 / 8:5). It has very shallow, maglev keys. It takes getting used to but I believe it would be durable and even enable quicker typing. The problem is I have a laptop with an OLED screen. I wish I didn't have to step backwards in terms of color reproduction. The device is also too expensive right now.

I'm waiting for 8:5, OLED or microLED, and I'm continually looking at Thunderbolt docks for something cheap & compact. The Dell XPS 2-in-1 is very close to what I want, but I wish there were 1 more USB type-c.

Dell actually has an OLED screen on the Dell XPS 15, but it's 3840x2160 (16:9). c'est la vie..

As I understand, the new XPS is also coming out with a 16:10, but it is also an IPS panel.

Of course many YouTuber creators are in the video creation domain. So why view reviews on YouTube instead of reading reviews that are published in text form?

Mainly laziness and entertainment. If I was indeed buying one tomorrow, I'd spend a lot more time reading people's experiences on Reddit, for instance. But just for watching tech reviews while I eat dinner or something, I sure wish there were programmers out there making videos for that audience.

I've considered filling this gap myself. Perhaps less about specifically programmers and more about regular people who have a regular job that dictates their use cases. Almost all big YouTubers are fulltime YouTubers and when it comes to tech and its impact on my day to day life, their opinions tend to be a bit lacking. Ofcourse, if you weren't a full-time YT, you likely wouldn't become big so it's a catch-22.

Secondly, the review genre lends itself to a race for releasing something first and results in only the most superficial aspects of a product considered which I find could be better served as well.

I have no idea of youtube channels, but I ask on the irc channels I like to hang out in.

That's a fantastic aphorism. Words to live by.
