While the 395 is very cool I do feel that the next generation will be an enormous step forward if AMD integrates FSR 4 in their APUs. Neutral network based upscaling makes a huge difference since you can get away with far lower (real) rendering resolutions and don't need any (expensive) anti-aliasing solutions anymore.

There's a bunch of demos on YouTube of people upscaling from as low as 360p and while not pretty, it's definitely serviceable. It might be worth the wait if you're budget constraint or patient!

European here.

I feel that our priorities have been on social/climate issues. For a very long time the feeling was that we had enough prosperity and that more was nice but that it was not as important.

There was some serious talk about "de-growth" and the trend (for some groups) was mostly towards working less but maintaining the same standard. Among left political circles it seemed that the focus was on doing the most good, for the most people and this focus often lay outside of Europe. To put this in a historical context, many Europeans (especially Germans) feel that we have historical sins to atone for.

We trusted the US and were happy to see them succeed. To a lesser degree we trusted China and Russia and we figured that they would make (economical) rational choices to codependency was seen as a strength and not a weakness.

It's very clear that we were in some degrees naïve and lazy and wasted opportunities and choices. Europe occasionally needs a good crisis to get going again, I'm glad we're finally getting one.

Stephen Kotkin, the historian, made a podcast comment that the US share of global GDP has remained about the same over time, regardless of politics/policy/crisis.

We Americans love our economic growth, for better and worse.

I used to manage software teams in Europe, Russia, North America and China/Taiwan. Quality of life seemed best in Europe, Asia seemed best for the young, and the US was the most business aggressive. I liked the Canadians. California climate (and innovation) can't be beat.

In my next life, I will figure out what's best...

You did the same dumb canada did, assuming usa would be happy forever taking care of the world while you focused on luxury beliefs. We are all paying now that usa finally figured out the arrangment was too costly given the impending doom of the ussr existing was gone. It makes me aad thinking about where we migjt be now if we had focused on actual progress rather than luxury beliefs. Chance is strongly non zero we would have developed the tech to solve our climate issues for example.

Not at all but it seems reasonable to set some standards for the game (e.g supporting free trade) and stop playing with those that do not respect the rules.

Unfortunately with both China and America not respecting the rules that's not realistic for Europe at the moment but one can dream.

While the Dutch healthcare system has challenges I would say it's working surprisingly well give the demographic trends and budgetary constraints. In general statistics do seem to back this up.

There's a strong focus on streamlining and reducing "unnecessary" care (including a lot of preventative care that is accessible in other countries) but without doing that now the whole system will not be affordable in 20 - 30 years.

Is that the optimal approach? I'm not sure, taking a patient wishes into account and doing (some) preventative care does probably have a positive ROI. Having said that I can see both sides of the coin but as a younger person I'm glad they're taken future demands into account.

Performance is better in some cases but worse in others (mostly Dreamcast and other 3D sfuff).

In general Rockchip does offer a more modern and streamlined experience though, the software is generally more up-to-date and it has some nice quality of life features such as a theme and bezel downloader. If you have a spare microSD card definitely give it a try ;)

Different devices have different levels of support. Support for the H700 (the chipset in the CubeXX) has been added a few months ago and the project is still working out the kinks.

Unfortunately we're often limited by whatever blobs the manufacturer provides and whatever is supported by the mainline kernel, as you can imagine there's not a whole lot of people experimenting with the latest and the greatest on these devices so the project often runs into regressions when upgrading. I wish the situation was better but given the prices these devices are going for it's a small wonder they work as well as they do ;) Having (some) mainline support does mean that we'll see updates for years and years so with a bit of luck the situation will improve over time!

For reference the Rockchip devices (RK3266 and RK3566) have been supported for longer and offer a general smooth experience. I've had pretty good luck with my Powkiddy X55!

With regards to 2, just like bazzite and some other distros Rocknix uses a read-only filesystem, you can use mounts to allow certain paths to be overwritten. The default configuration strives to find a balance between allowing some customization and stability.

What you're describing does sound like a bug, it might be that some flag is set incorrectly. I would recommend dropping in at the Discord.

I appreciate your taking the time to reply!

And yeah, I was aware that H700 is the new kid on the block as it pertains to Rocknix. It's just a bit frustrating, especially because (imo) the Anbernic H700 devices are the ones most deeply in need of a solid custom firmware / OS option. The version of Retroarch included in the stock OS is lacking some pretty standard cores (no INTV, no Colecovision, no Speccy, no 3DO, and that's just the "tier 2"s that come to mind, not doing a deep dive into the even-more obscure stuff like the Sharp systems or CDi). And the default Ambernic OS itself is, charitably, "not-great" (why are there two entirely-separate menus to browse games from, why can't I re-scan without rebooting, the list goes on and on and on...)

> What you're describing does sound like a bug, it might be that some flag is set incorrectly.

Yeah, hopefully this isn't intended behavior. :) The ROMs are being samba'd right into the appropriate directories (I tried both "roms-internal" and the third option that isn't "roms-external" - forgot the name and already wiped the card). I can play them fine as long as I don't ever reboot, so it's not like they're just not copying. The themes are downloaded and installed solely through the frontend, I'm not doing anything too obscure or beardy.

It even does this on a fresh install, so the default theme is immediately replaced with the... even-more-default...? theme. That definitely threw me for a loop on the first go-round. The "more-default-than-default" theme actually doesn't look too bad (sort of has a Cosmic Smash [1] vibe), but a lot of text breaks outside the confines of its boxes and it lacks any cursor highlighting in menus, so without screenshots you have no idea which option (or game) you're selecting.

I don't use Discord, but I'm happy to file Github issues as long as you think it'd be non-redundant / a productive use of my time. Otherwise, by all means feel free to link my comments in the Discord!

I'm not sure if that a sign of the coming apocalypse.

I hope it reflects the fact that most people don't have a great understanding of IT and cyber security rather than a sign of a sick world ;)

Can confirm, there's increasing pressure from legal and compliance to map the risk and look into alternatives.

For the cloud this is somewhat doable (we could run on Hetzner if we increased the team size) but for Microsoft/Apple there are zero alternative ofcourse so sofar it hasn't proceeded beyond a few risk_mapping.xls files.

Hi Laurens. Not sure if this interests you, but this is something my company [1] specialises in. You don't need to grow your team, we handle the migration, and also include ongoing DevOps support. Plus your company can still remain in control of the infra. You can reach me directly at adam@...

From my sources at AWS I hear that pretty much all cloud migrations for EU institutions were lift-and-shift.

So I guess you just don't have enough pressure to execute the down-to-earth migrations.

The engineering culture in DIGIT is abysmal and outside of it, totally inexistent. This can also explain the lack of progress.

> From my sources at AWS I hear that pretty much all cloud migrations for EU institutions were lift-and-shift.

This is in line with my experience, too. When asked why, they would usually mention 2 arguments: 1) additional work for not much extra value, 2) vendor lock-in.

I am not affiliated with EU institutions, but followed their IT evolution for a while.

Some 20+ years ago, their IT was fragmented but decent, pretty much on par with the private sector.

But then DIGIT started the centralization efforts, and it squeezed life out of internal IT departments across institutions and directorates.

DIGIT bought all of its Microsoft software from British crooks that defrauded the Post Office and were at the origin of the Horizon scandal .

DIGIT created the infamous framework contracts system that still siphons funds to Greek and Italian mafia.

DIGIT caught on Drupal quite early but managed to suck the soul of every Drupal developer that joined in.

Once in a while the arrogance and ignorance of DIGIT management let beautiful things flourish under the carpet. For many years the EU tender system was the only big website that used XSLT for its original purpose of rendering XML into HTML on websites.

What I am trying to say is that DIGIT has to be reformed and given clear operational instructions, e.g. no more cloud migrations and a 10-year period with checkpoints to bring everything back to earth.

They should also decentralize and nourish proximity IT services.

Also people responsible for money laundering, e.g. the individuals who signed the Fujitsu framework agreement or the European Dynamics framework agreement should be prosecuted.

They may claim these agreements were legal, but let the courts decide.

Sorry to ask, but what is DIGIT? I did try to Google it, but nothing useful came up.

Thank you, I... didn't connect the dots. Both embarrassing and thank you

last I checked the current working version is risk_mapping_v8_sharepoint_bacckup_v4_draft.xls

What kind of Apple cloud infra are people using?

I looked for personal use at Hetzner.

No spaces allowed in passwords.

Not a great first impression.

Why do you need spaces in the password? Honestly never ever thought about using spaces in the password.

Why would they disallow it? It’s just a character like everything else.

UX. People accidentally adding whitespace by copy&pasting it. Easy to overlook and probably lead to some customers being confused. Also people use whitespace to separate words in text. Most password managers don't generate passwords with whitespace by default.

Disallowed characters like that give the impression that plaintext passwords are being stored.

Besides what others said: Passphrases like the famous "correct horse battery staple" https://xkcd.com/936/

I think the better question is, are they the only ones not taking passwords?

Some of their ex-members have been literal Nazis. Something that doesn't go over very well in Germany. The party banned these people but their standpoints are still very controversial, the main issue is that in some aspects they do no support the juridical system.

So yeah, regular right wing compared to American standards but I think we can all agree that respecting the trias politica is a good thing in any country.

I’ll be honest, as an American looking in from the outside, this looks like the leftist parties in Germany trying to silence the opposition. If the party is expelling the true extremists like the Neo-Nazi former party members that you mentioned, I don’t see why they should be held responsible for them.

This would be like declaring the entire American Republican Party extreme-far right because of a few whack jobs like the Proud Boys.

Opposition parties are extremely important to a properly functioning democracy.

What is so extreme and dangerous about the actual current AfD party members other than their anti-immigration stance?

They are not expelling extremists based on extremism. They are expelling extremists based on public fallout. The remaining ones are effectively their spokespeople.

Germany has a wide range of political parties that cover the entire political spectrum. A party of extremists is not needed for a strong opposition. What German politics needs is momentum, and the will to actually get stuff done, even if it'll be unpopular. The fact that the AfD managed to use and abuse that mindset to gain popularity does not make them the right ones to make a positive impact. In fact, even putting their extremism aside, their contrarian and anti-progressive "everything new is woke" mentality is the exact opposite of what the country needs, for all I care.

I've answered your last question in a sibling comment to yours.[1]

The anti immigration stance is not the problem in itself, it's a symptom of their xenophobic views.

"The party's prevailing ethnic and descent-based understanding of the people is not compatible with the free democratic basic order. It aims to exclude certain population groups from equal participation in society, to subject them to unequal treatment that does not conform to the constitution and thus to assign them a legally devalued status. Specifically, the AfD does not consider German citizens with a history of migration from Muslim countries, for example, to be equal members of the German people as defined by the party in ethnic terms."

Translated with deepl from https://www.verfassungsschutz.de/SharedDocs/pressemitteilung...

Their anti rule of law stance, their criticism of parliament, their idolatry of ancestry, genealogy and genetics.

Also their retoric: their default stance is the fundamental attribution error (my ingroup failed because we were betrayed/cheated, your outgroup failed because you are lazy/bad/inferior). When your bonapartist (which is cesarism+nationalism basically) ideology is tinted (or tainted I would say, but I'm biased) with that reasoning mistake, you're close to fascism. Some people could call them post-fascists, but to me post-fascism died in Italy in the 80s (not true, I have a post-fascist friend, but they're extremely rare). Because they're too dumb to have real 'thinkers' (and they don't read anyway), they rehash old ideas and dunk everything at the wall to see what stick (which can work l), to me they're closer to proto-fascists (see Balkan nationalists the the late 19th century).

See for yourself: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bj%C3%B6rn_H%C3%B6cke

(even if parts of the AfD may not be openly fascists, they still tolerate them in leading positions)

I'm not German but it's my understanding that nothing is being banned. This classification allows the German intelligence agencies to be more aggressive in gathering intelligence of any potential misconduct within the AfD.

I'll abstain from making any moral judgements about this, I don't feel qualified to do so but I understand that the historical context places a very large role in Germany.

Any association with Nazi's is condemned in the harshest way. The AfD has crossed that line several times in the past.

The actual leftist parties are part of the opposition. These opposition parties are much more supportive of banning AFD than the incoming centre-right government. So obviously this is not about silencing opposition, but about fighting an extremist right wing movement which is opposing liberal democracy.

There's not a lot of powerful RISC-V hardware out there but that's a bit beside the point.RISC-V is exciting because it's fully opensource.

RISC-V is partially open source, vendors can do whatever they feel like with extensions.

From the high level, yes RISC-V is open, but as far as I can tell, When a chip is designed, nothing is preventing it from being closed like this SF21H8898
