I don't use smart home devices -- there aren't any features there that appeal to me. But my understanding is that it's entirely possible to set up a connected home that doesn't depend on cloud services, or on devices controlled by a corporation. I would think that a software engineer would realize the risk he was taking, and not make his entire existence dependent on the whims of Amazon.
